Sometimes, the greatest impact of a simple act of kindness cannot be measured in numbers. It is found in the lives that are transformed.
John Deng Bol was forced to flee his home in South Sudan as conflict escalated around him. Alongside many other young people seeking safety, he embarked on a long and dangerous journey across the desert in search of a better future. The journey was filled with uncertainty, loss and rejection, as many refugees struggled to find a place where they would be accepted.
That journey eventually led him to Arlit, Niger, where he encountered the Salesians of Don Bosco.
Here, John found more than food and shelter. He found people who welcomed him with dignity, encouraged him to learn, and helped him begin rebuilding his life. Through the Salesian community, he learnt French, improved his English, and discovered the confidence to express himself through writing.
Today, that journey has become a book.
In The Story of Young John Deng Bol, he shares his experiences, not only to recount the challenges he faced, but also to encourage other young people who may be going through difficult situations. His story is a reminder that hope can be restored when people choose compassion over rejection.
For the Salesians, education has always been more than classroom learning. It is about restoring dignity, building confidence and creating opportunities for young people to realise their potential, regardless of where they come from.
John’s story is one example of how a welcoming community and access to education can change the direction of a person’s life.
