Empowering Women at the PDO: Advancing Rights, Justice, and Action for All Women and Girls

As the world observes International Women’s Day 2026, the global theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls” encourages institutions and communities to reflect on how they are creating environments where women can thrive, lead, and make meaningful contributions to society.

At the Project Development Office (PDO) of the Salesians of Don Bosco Africa Nigeria Niger province, this commitment is more than words; it is evident in the daily work, collaboration, and leadership of a diverse team dedicated to transforming the lives of young people and vulnerable communities.

Among the nine members of the PDO team are two women whose dedication, professionalism, and resilience continue to drive the office’s mission and demonstrate how inclusive workplaces can empower women to develop and lead.

These women are Maryjane Onyinye and Blessing Wilson-Salt, who exemplify that women can effectively balance family life and professional responsibilities while making a significant impact.

For Maryjane Onyinye, her role within the PDO extends beyond financial management; it is a chance to contribute to a broader mission of service.

“Working with the PDO has provided me with the enabling platform to demonstrate that every woman possesses great potential, and when provided with the right guidance and encouragement, this potential can flourish and contribute meaningfully to community and societal development.

Similarly, Blessing Wilson-Salt reflects on how her role has enabled her to develop and demonstrate leadership beyond the office setting.

“My work with the PDO has allowed me to showcase leadership skills beyond the office, particularly through collaboration with external partners to ensure our projects meet the highest safety standards. Excellence is central to every project we undertake.” In addition, working with the PDO has provided me with a platform to influence the lives of more young and vulnerable individuals, especially girls and women. It fosters collaboration and reinforces the Salesian mission of reaching those who need support the most.”

Their experiences underscore the importance of supportive work environments where women are empowered to grow professionally while contributing meaningfully to community development.

Within the PDO, the workplace culture is rooted in mutual respect, teamwork, and shared purpose. Over time, this environment has grown into more than just a professional setting; it has become a supportive space where colleagues act like a family. Such an atmosphere fosters fair opportunities for growth and encourages both women and men to share their skills and ideas to advance the organisation’s mission.

While celebrating the contributions of women in the team, this occasion also prompts reflection on how the PDO can further promote gender balance within its framework. Encouraging more women to assume leadership roles, supporting professional development, and fostering mentorship for young female professionals are key steps towards establishing a more inclusive and balanced workplace.

As the PDO joins the global community in marking International Women’s Day, the team reaffirms its dedication to fostering a culture where the rights, voices, and contributions of women and girls are respected and valued.

Because when women are empowered to lead, serve, and innovate, communities become stronger—and the mission of transforming lives becomes even more powerful.
