Project and Development Office (PDO) Monitoring Visit to Koko, Kebbi State

Jajaye community need urgent education rescue

The PDO team, led by the PDO Director, Rev. Fr. Raphael Airoboman, undertook a monitoring visit to the Salesian community in Koko, Kebbi State, accompanied by the PDO consultant, Engr. Christian Agboada of Zigato Architectural.

The visit focused on assessing training quality and compliance at the Don Bosco Vocational Training Institute, inspecting the progress of the centre’s expansion project, and reviewing the proposed renovation of the recently acquired Koko Medical Clinic.

Strengthening Skills and Opportunities for Young People

At the Don Bosco Vocational Training Institute, the team witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of skills training on young people in the community. The institute offers training in trades such as Fashion Design/Tailoring, ICT, Electrical & Solar Installation, Building & Construction, Makeup and Hairdressing. Soon, other trades such as Welding & Fabrication and Automobile will be added, equipping students with practical skills for sustainable livelihoods.

Both students and instructors expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to learn and grow within the institute, highlighting the life-changing role the centre continues to play.

One inspiring story is that of Esther Peter, a former student who has returned from Lagos to serve as a fashion design instructor. Her return reflects a strong sense of giving back and the lasting impact of the institute.

Similarly, Mr Moses, an ICT instructor, highlighted courses such as Microsoft Office applications and graphic design, which are helping students build relevant digital skills.

A Community Supported by Partnerships

The PDO and the institute expressed sincere appreciation to donor partners such as Misean Cara Ireland, Jugendhilfe Swiss and others whose support continues to make it possible.

Hope Amid Challenges: The Koko Medical Clinic

The visit also extended to the Koko Medical Clinic, where the team met a dedicated midwife and her staff who continue to serve the community despite limited resources.

In a touching moment, the team witnessed the joy of a newborn baby, a powerful reminder of the importance of accessible healthcare—even in challenging conditions.

Acquired in 2025, the clinic is currently in need of renovation and proper equipment. Efforts are ongoing to secure the necessary funding to upgrade the facility and improve healthcare delivery for the community.

Reaching the Most Vulnerable: Jajaye Community

The PDO team also visited Jajaye, a rural farming community located about 10 km from Koko. Here, the Salesians run the Dry Season Education Programme, an initiative designed to provide basic education to young people who are unable to attend school during the rainy season due to farming activities.

Supported by the PDO, this programme ensures that children in Jajaye still have access to education during the dry season, helping to bridge learning gaps and create opportunities for a better future.

The visit highlighted the urgent need for continued support and strategic interventions to improve access to education and overall living conditions in the community.

Looking Ahead

The monitoring visit to Koko and Jajaye reaffirmed the importance of sustained investment in education, skills development, and healthcare for vulnerable communities.

As the PDO continues its mission, we invite partners, collaborators, and well-wishers to join us in expanding our impact and bringing hope to more young people and communities in need.
