The Salesians of Don Bosco arrived in Alit in September 2025, marking the beginning of a new and hopeful chapter in the pastoral life of the local Church. This Christmas celebration was therefore especially meaningful, as it was the first Christmas since their arrival and also the first to be presided over by Bishop Ignatius, the newly consecrated Bishop of Maradi. His presence brought great joy and encouragement to the young Salesian mission and to the faithful of the area.

Adding to the significance of the occasion was the presence of the Provincial and the Provincial Economer, whose participation underscored the importance of the mission in Alit within the wider Salesian Province. Their attendance made the celebration a truly historic moment for the local Catholic community.
Despite being a small gathering of about fifty faithful, the Christmas liturgy was simple yet vibrant, filled with prayer, song, and a strong sense of communion. Those present experienced a deep feeling of belonging and mutual support, strengthened by the shared joy of celebrating the birth of Christ together. The warmth of the celebration reflected the close-knit nature of the community.
The Diocese of Maradi remains a missionary Church, with fewer than 3,000 Catholics, many of whom come from neighboring countries. In Niger, Catholics make up less than one percent of the total population. Yet, even as a small minority, the Catholic faithful are known for their openness, resilience, and welcoming spirit, living their faith quietly but with conviction.
In his message, Bishop Ignatius encouraged everyone to recognize the face of Christ in one another, especially in a context where fraternity, respect, and peaceful coexistence are essential. His words were a reminder that Christmas is not only about celebration, but about becoming signs of Christ’s love through daily encounters and relationships.
This first Christmas in Alit, marked by simplicity, faith, and hope, will remain a cherished memory for the Salesian community and the local faithful alike—a testament to God’s presence among His people.
Merry Christmas!
